Eight cattle died in a fortnight at a cow shelter in Rasra tehsil district, prompting authorities to seek an answer.
According to the statement, District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar came to know about the cattle deaths during a ground inspection of a large cow shelter in the tehsil's Bachhai Pur village on Saturday.
Kumar asked the vets for a response and issued instructions to take action against the people responsible.
The district magistrate also directed the veterinary officer to submit a report on the matter within 15 days, the statement said.
